“In a country as wealthy as ours, it’s amazing that so many people are going without. Forty-nine million people experience hunger in this nation, 17 million of which are children,” Silverbush asserts.

Her show on KPCC 89.3 is a live two-hour public affairs program known for its innovative discussions of local politics and culture, and for its presentation of national and world news as it affects Southern California.

Show Notes
L.A. is in the midst of a hunger crisis, with over 1.25 million people in LA County, mostly children and the elderly, struggling to get enough to eat. As part of their “Blueprint to End Hunger”, the Jewish Federation and its Fed Up With Hunger partners are calling on elected officials to declare Los Angeles a “hunger-free community.” Patt talks with them about their three part plan to eradicate hunger, how LA county can help and whether ending hunger is an economically feasible goal given the city’s dire financial straits.

Andrew Cushnir, associate executive vice president of the Jewish Federation

Sunday, October 18, hundreds of people came out to the Milken JCC in West Hills and offered up their time to Feeding the Hungry. I got to witness and participate in this amazing feat. What an experience!

We worked with Project Elijah, a foundation in Des Moines, Iowa that has developed a highly efficient method of mixing, weighing, and packaging nutritious, high protein food. The foundation does events like this all over the country and they’ll package over 400,000 meals this year alone.

Volunteers came from congregations and schools in San Fernando, Simi, Conejo, Santa Clarita, and Antelope valleys. Response from the community was so overwhelming we we had to close down registration more than a week before the event! Anyone of any age could participate: families, seniors, teens, did the grunt work while children made cards to put into the cases of food. Talk about a teachable moment!

All the meals we packaged–and I’m not exaggerating when I say 35,000–went to SOVA/JFS. Temple Ahavat Shalom in Northidge sponsored the event and we were responsible for managing the volunteers. The food and equipment was provided through grants from the L.A. Federation Valley Alliance and the Ted and Sarah Seldin Family Fund. A big thank you goes out to everyone who made the event such a success, especially our volunteers!

Last Thursday, October 29th, at 8:44 am Hollywood’s Most Hated website featured a blog post on “A Worthwhile Cause.” Yep, you guessed it. That cause was Fed Up With Hunger!

We’re not exactly sure what prompted the “Queen of Media” to take interest in us, but we’re absolutely thrilled that he exposed our campaign to his massive following. According to an article in the LA Times this past August, the site gets more than 10 million unique visitors per month and “commands as much as $72,000 for a single 24-hour wallpaper-style” banner ad. Hopefully a few gossip fiends will take an interest in helping to end hunger here in LA.

We’ve changed their names out of respect for dignity and privacy. If you, or someone in your life, has known hunger, please share your experience with us at FedUpWithHunger@givelifemeaning.org >>

“Gladys”
Age: 76
Neighborhood: South Los Angeles
Source: Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church

A retired registered nurse, Gladys supports herself on a small Social Security income. Diabetes and stroke have made it hard for her to walk. She lives alone. Once a month, volunteers from Gladys’ church leave a grocery bag filled with chicken, bread, and canned corn on her doorstep. The monthly deliveries help her get by, but her church food pantry is at its lowest level in recent memory. Gladys doesn’t know how many more deliveries she can expect.

“Betty”
Age: 72
Neighborhood: Pico-Robertson
Source: Jewish Family Services/SOVA

Betty is a widow who relies on her late husband’s social security and modest savings. Each month, she struggles to pay her rent, utilities and co-payments for blood pressure and heart medication. Food is her last priority.
